Mia Barry said… Hi again,
The only times I noticed pain was when they apply the "bend" to the foot when they put on new plaster casts. Louis always cried as they have to bend the foot and put a bit of pressure on for about 20 seconds until the cast sets. It only lasts for seconds and then he was happy again! Many parents reports that their baby shows no discomfort during the plaster application, some even sleep through! I just told myself - what is the alternative? A life walking on his ankles? I take 20 seconds of crying any day!
The other stage is the boots and bar and this is when parents tend to be a bit worried as baby is a little older and he/she are starting to notice things around themselves more so cries a bit more. We then panic un-necessarialy, in my opinion, thinking our baby is in pain. The baby is just behaving like any other baby :)
I was terrified before Louis was born as pictures of boots and bars looks a bit heavy and old fashioned and sore - they are not! You and the baby will get used to them so fast and before you know it, they come off during the day and only stay on at night. Now that Louis is 2 and running around I do not ever see him in pain. It is great!
I have not yet noticed the "thinner calf" thing. I understand that this will probably be the case when he gets a little older, but it is only cosmetic in that case. We joke, me and my husband, as he has really big calves so we say that Louis will turn out to look normal!
You don't really bathe the baby when he/she wears casts. It is a lot of hassle and not worth it if the cast get wet. As they are changed once a week you can usually give the baby a good bath when they come off. Otherwise I used to wipe Louis down each day with wet, warm cotton wool. That's enough as little babies don't tend to get dirty, except for a bit of sick here and there but cotton wool is great.
So again, try not to worry. What will be will be, and you will settle into treatment fast and before you know it your baby will be walking and you won't even know it had/has talipes!

Firstly - you are not alone feeling all this! - We all go through it in some degree or another!
There is NO medical proven link between downs and club foot! Most babies with this condition have it isolated and are perfect in every other way. There is of course a chance a baby has downs, but that is just as small as any baby. It is a hard decision to make about the test - would it change things for you? I was never offered this test as here in ireland it is not seen to be linked with other issues. They do check the spine carefully during the scans, but that's it (in my experience).
Please try and not to worry - the VAST majority of all clubfoot babies are treated with 99% success rate with the Ponseti method (plaster casts and boots and bar). I cried a lot too when i found out, but then I suddenly stopped. I said to myself, look this baby has club feet, it is treatable and lets enjoy the pregnancy! So I did - it was so lovely and when Louis was born the immense joy you feel is the same as with the birth of any baby!
I also felt a little apprehensive about what people would think when I told them, but I decided to tell everyone from the moment I found out. There is nothing to be afraid off and you will be surprised how many people will suddenly say - oh, I had that as a baby, or they know someone with the condition. It is a fairly common thing! The word "club foot" is not very pretty I suppose, so use Talipes until you get used to it :)
Try not to worry, really, your baby will most likely only have "funny feet" that will be rectified before he/she can walk! Trust me, you will have many other things to worry about then like drawing on your walls or running out!
Enjoy, relax and please feel free to ask any questions you may have!
