Talipes Together | Club Foot Support Network

Hello everybody!

My name is Claudia. I was born and raised in Germany and moved to the US 6 years ago. I have a 4 year old son and a 4 month old daughter. She was born with talipes on both feet. When we found out in week 18 of my pregnancy we didn't really know what to think of it. We did a lot of research and met the Dr. before she was born in September. She got her first casts when we left the hospital, 4 days old. She's had some trouble keeping the casts on early, between week 3 and 5. She had her first Achilles release when she was 5 weeks old and her second one two weeks ago in the OR. She is 19 weeks old and we're still in casts! We are getting new casts today, hopefully the last ones before we finally transition into the shoes.

Hi Claudia!

Welcome to Talipes Together! My son Louis also had a lot of casts - 11 alltogether. "Proper" Ponseti method would only do around 5 casts, but it does not seem to do any harm if they have a few more. The aim is to get the foot corrected as once the boots and bar comes on the emphasis is to keep the feet in the corrected position. Hopefully your daughter is coming out of her casts soon! Please let us know how you get on.

Hi Mia,

thank you for your message. We had to go in and have another sliding cast removed and she will go under anesthesia again this afternoon to have that one put back on. I'm still hoping this will be the last one, but I have been saying that for a while now, so I don't know. I've been very optimistic thruw this whole process so far but my optimism seems to fade a bit. But I know there is no alternative and this has to be taken care off.

I will keep you updated. Thank you again!

Claudia

Another sliding cast later and Lily is now getting a 3-month break from casting. I'm looking into massage therapy now to possibly help her along. Any thoughts?

Hi Claudia!

Thanks for your update - even though it is one of a bit of bother. How do you feel she is getting on personally? I am concerned the casts keep slipping... If the ponseti method is adhered to and casts applied in a proper manner they should not be sliding off. Of course a cast can slide once or so, but if they keep doing it is is unfortunatley usually a sign that the Dr is not applying the cast correctly. I would suggest thinking of getting a second opinion. Do some research and see if you can find a really good ponseti dr not too far away from you. There is a US forum on yahoo groups called nosurgery4clubfoot that is very active and they will most likely be able to let you know where and who is really good near you! It is just a suggestion, but it does ring alarm bells so that would be what I would do in your situation. Please do let us know how you get on over the next few weeks!

Hi Mia,

thanks for your respond. Yes, we do want to get a second, or even third opinion. Thanks for letting me know about the yahoo group. I will check it out. Lily is doing great. Even though it's not the best situation, we enjoy having her out of casts. I will keep you posted.

Thanks again.

Claudia
