Talipes Together

Talipes Together | Club Foot Support Network

Hiya, my lg (14 weeks) was born with congenital unilateral talipes (left) and is currently on her 3rd week of bar n boots. Recently myself, the HV and then the GP have noticed that Lucy hangs her head to the right side. HV reckoned that it was muscular damage but GP took a look and thinks her spine may be curved. She's had her hips scanned (at 6 weeks) so know they are unaffected by anything but just wanted to know if anyone was aware of any links between talipes and spinal issues. Thanks. Jen xx

Hi Jen,

I am not aware of any links between talipes and spinal issues, so I can't personally be of any help here I'm afraid... If I hear or see any information that says different I will be sure to let you know. There is a good US based yahoo group called nosurgery4clubfoot that  you might want to post the same question to. They are very active and have been going for a long time so they may some information. But I think your situation is unrelated. Hope all goes well, and please let us know how you get on!

Hi Jennifer,

I do not see any likely correlation to talipes and spinal issues, apart for conditions like spina bifida in a long term scenario. However, i would suggest that you consult a pediatrician/pediatric neurologist particularly for the head lag on the right side (and if you havent had an answer to your question).

Nevertheless i do have a few queries;

- does the head hang to the right side on a constant basis? and does your baby actively move her head to the other side?

- curved spine could be just structural and positional as of this age..but if it is marked or progressive you should be taking it rather seriously.

- how are the developmental milestones of your baby? does she feed well, can roll to one side and roll back, etc

Once i have a response to these, i will probably have more to ask after i hear from you.

Dont worry,

Prem.

Hi, I have some news re Lucy's spine. I spoke to the orthopaedic consultant that I see for Lucy's talipes and he kindly offered to examine her as he would be the consultant I'd see even if I went through Paediatrics. He looked at her and could find nothing wrong with her spine and feels that her neck muscle has a knot in it and she simply needs physio! Admittedly since I saw the GP her neck has improved. She does favour the right side but can move the other way and during tummy time is able to lift her head so looks like he is right and the GP was just over-reacting. :) thank you for all your help xx

That's great news! It is always good to look into these things though, but hopefully now you can sleep soundly :)
